GUIDE / INSPIRE TO CREATE MEDIA PRICING

WHAT DOES A MURAL COST IN HAWAIʻI?

A plain-language guide to how Inspire To Create Media, the Kauaʻi studio of muralist Trysen Kaneshige, prices its murals. Trysen has painted 30+ walls for the County, schools, resorts and brands since 2013. It starts with what a wall does for the people who see it, then covers what drives the price, how long it takes, and how clients pay for it.

START HERE / WHAT A WALL IS WORTH

THE VALUE COMES FIRST

A mural is not a decoration bought once. It is work that keeps doing a job every day, for everyone who passes it. Before any number, every ITC wall starts with one question: what should this wall do for the people who see it?

A place people seek out

Walls become landmarks. Visitors stop, photograph and share them, and a space people used to walk past becomes one they come back to. After the Kauaʻi Veterans Museum murals, the museum's director said Trysen had placed it on the map as a "must-see" destination.

A story people see themselves in

Students, staff and neighbors see their own place, history and values every day. At Wilcox Elementary, the principal said the mural "connects the students to the place that they live in."

A message that keeps working

A wall can carry a message no flyer can. Fishing for Hope painted the free crisis text line, Text "Aloha" to 741-741, where all of Līhuʻe could see it.

THE MATH OVER TIME

A $10K wall that lasts ten years works out to under $3 a day. Spread across everyone who walks past it, that is a fraction of a cent per person, for a one-of-one work designed for that place and painted from concept to final coat by one artist.

With that in mind, here is how Inspire To Create Media turns a wall into one flat price.

01 / THE SHORT ANSWER

HOW ITC PRICES A MURAL

Community and school walls
from $35 / sq ft
Institutional and County walls
$65 to $70 / sq ft
Resort and brand walls
from $70 / sq ft + usage
Small murals
from $3K
Live painting at events
from $1,500

Every ITC wall is quoted as one flat project price. Behind it, the studio checks two things: the real time, materials and equipment the wall takes, and the starting rate for that type of wall, then quotes whichever is higher. That keeps a tall, detailed wall from being underpriced and a big, simple wall from being overpriced. Most finished ITC walls land between $5K and $25K, and project budgets stay between the studio and each client.

PLEASE NOTE

These are Inspire To Create Media's own rates for ITC projects. They are not industry standards or a price list for other artists. Every muralist and studio in Hawaiʻi sets their own pricing.

02 / WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

EIGHT THINGS THAT MOVE THE NUMBER

01

Size

Bigger walls cost more, but size is only part of it. Two walls the same size can price very differently once height, surface and detail are counted. Very small walls are covered by the minimum.

02

Height and access

Walls above arm's reach need a scissor lift or scaffolding. Rental, delivery and setup time go into the quote.

03

The surface

Block, stucco, corrugated metal, wood and interior drywall each prep differently. Peeling or damaged walls need repair and primer before any art goes on.

04

Detail and lettering

A bold graphic reads fast and paints fast. Realistic wildlife, portraits and hand lettering take more hours per square foot.

05

Inside or outside

Exterior walls get exterior-grade paint and a protective clear coat to stand up to Hawaiʻi sun, salt air and rain.

06

Location and travel

Walls on Kauaʻi carry no travel cost. Off-island projects add airfare, lodging and shipping for paint and equipment.

07

Brand use

When a mural carries a brand, or will be used in marketing and merchandise, a usage fee covers those rights.

08

Timeline

Rush schedules that need extra crew or weekend days cost more than walls with room to plan.

03 / HOW LONG IT TAKES

DAYS FOR SMALL WALLS, WEEKS FOR BIG ONES

A small wall can be painted in a few days. A large public wall can take several weeks on site, plus time up front for the concept and any approvals. Fishing for Hope, a full warehouse wall in Līhuʻe, took two artists about a week.

Outdoor schedules always leave room for rain days, and the start date depends on the studio calendar. When the calendar is full, the studio offers a later start rather than rushing a wall.

04 / HOW IT WORKS

FROM FIRST MESSAGE TO UNVEILING

  1. 01

    Start a wall

Share where the wall is, a few photos, rough measurements and what it should say.

  2. 02

    Site visit

Trysen walks the wall, measures it, checks the surface and access, and listens to the story behind the place.

  3. 03

    Concept

A design built from the place itself: its mountains and shoreline, native plants and animals, and the people who use it, with rounds of feedback.

  4. 04

    Agreement

A 50% deposit holds the dates. The balance is due when the wall is finished.

  5. 05

    Paint

Surface prep, base layers, detail and lettering, then a clear coat on exterior walls.

  6. 06

    Unveiling

The finished wall, plus photos the client can share with their own community.

05 / WAYS TO FUND A MURAL

MOST PUBLIC WALLS ARE SHARED EFFORTS

Sponsors

Local companies often sponsor walls for schools and community spaces. Grove Farm sponsored the Wilcox Elementary mural, and Home Depot donated house paint for the Kauaʻi Veterans Museum backgrounds.

Grants

County, state and foundation programs fund public art. Fishing for Hope was funded through the County of Kauaʻi's Kupaʻa Kauaʻi grant program, and the Native Birds of Kauaʻi panels through the County's Rise to Work program.

Partnerships

Nonprofits, schools and businesses can share a wall that serves all of them. The studio can help shape a sponsor or grant request around the story of the wall.

06 / PERMISSION

WHO NEEDS TO SAY YES

Every mural needs the property owner's written permission. Walls on public property go through the agency that manages them, and some neighborhoods and historic areas have design review. The studio works through those steps with the client during planning, before any paint is ordered.

07 / QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Is there a minimum?

Yes. Small murals start at $3K.

Do you paint outside Kauaʻi?

Yes. Inspire To Create Media has painted on Oʻahu and takes walls across Hawaiʻi. Travel is quoted separately.

How long will an outdoor mural last?

With exterior-grade paint and a clear coat, an outdoor mural holds its color for years. Walls out of direct afternoon sun, and a fresh clear coat over time, stay bright longer.

Can our name or logo be part of the mural?

Yes. Names and logos are hand lettered into the painting so they belong to the art, as on the Timbers Kauaʻi values wall.

Do you paint live at events?

Yes. Live painting for store openings, brand activations and pop-ups starts at $1,500.

What do you need to give a quote?

The wall's location, a few photos, rough measurements, the timeline, and what the wall should say. A site visit then sets the final scope.
