Wailua Golf Course
A tribute to Toyo Shirai, the designer of Wailua Golf Course, painted the full width of the clubhouse lanai for the County of Kauaʻi.
WHY THIS WALL
In 2026 the County of Kauaʻi Parks & Recreation brought Trysen on as a direct vendor to paint the clubhouse lanai at Wailua Golf Course, running the full width of the wall above the windows where golfers gather before and after a round.
The mural is a tribute to the man who designed the course. Toyo Shirai stands at one end in black and white, mid-swing, beside a lettered panel telling his story: Wailua was designed by Toyo Shirai and first built as a nine-hole course in the 1930s, with the front nine added in 1961. From his swing, the fairway runs out past the bluffs to the coastline and the ocean, under the hand-lettered line "Where Every Drive Meets The Horizon." Every golfer who walks onto the lanai now meets the person who shaped the course they are about to play.
Trysen painted the wall solo over several weeks beginning in August 2026, with the course open around him. Recap video by AiriX Studio.
